Psychedelic Therapy & the Future of Mental Health

Is Psychedelics the Future of Therapy?

Although psychedelic therapy is relatively new, it is proving to be a useful tool in treating several conditions like depression, anxiety, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, and eating disorders. Recently, psychedelics have become more widely accepted and the war against them is ending.

Now, research is showing that psychedelics are helping people manage their anxiety and depression symptoms. As with many other medical developments, particularly those involving mental health, worldwide acceptance is still varied.

What Are Psychedelics?

Psychedelic drugs, or hallucinogenic drugs, are compounds that are used both recreationally or as a therapeutic tool. They alter sensory perceptions, thought processes, and energy levels. They have been consumed over the centuries to facilitate spiritual experiences or to heighten states of awareness.

The effects of psychedelic drugs include altered perception of time, interpersonal communication difficulties, audio and visual hallucinations and other vivid sensory perceptions, nausea, energy increase (most likely due to heart rate), and spiritual experiences.

Among the list of psychedelic drugs are LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide), DMT and psilocybin mushrooms, among others.

In the 1960s hallucinogens were used in psychotherapy, but the political war on drugs halted this progress until recently. Now psychedelics are beginning to reappear as a psychiatric tool. Mainly because it allows change and growth to happen more easily in the brain.

How Does Psilocybin Work?

Research is starting to reveal the effects of psychedelics on the brain, and their potential as a therapeutic tool for mental illness. Psilocybin is a substance that initiates a psychoactive response when combined with the serotonin receptor in the brain. Before this happens, the psilocybin needs to pass through the liver to remove its phosphorous chain to become psilocin, the psychoactive form of psilocybin. Psilocin is a tryptamine alkaloid and is a structural analog to serotonin. When psilocin binds to the 5-HT2A receptor, the resulting “neuronal avalanches” are similar to REM sleep.

How Does Psychedelic Therapy Work?

Psychedelics therapy is a form of therapy that helps you understand and “integrate” your psychedelic experience into your daily life. Considered an integration therapy, psychedelics therapy refers to the use of psychedelic drugs(Magic mushrooms, LSD, DMT) to treat mental disorders and aid in the management of symptoms. It is helpful to include a professional therapist specializing in psychedelics to take you along this journey. Patients are helped with anything from becoming more connected spiritually, making major life changes, and processing trauma, to simply understanding more clearly the psychedelic journey, or setting life goals and staying grounded.

Psychedelic therapy has been proven effective in the treatment of several conditions, including:

Anxiety & Depression:

Psilocybin is similar to serotonin, a chemical messenger that directs and regulates our moods. If serotonin levels are low or imbalanced, it can lead to anxiety and depression.

PTSD:

Evidence shows that Psilocybin may act to stimulate nerve cell regrowth in the hippocampus part of the brain, the center for emotion and memory. A study in 2013 from the University of South Florida supported the hypothesis that psilocybin can help break the traumatic cycle that occurs in patients with PTSD.

Addiction:

Psychology Today claims that psilocybin maybe “A One Hit Cure for Addiction.” More studies at the University of South Florida offer information as to why psilocybin produces “very promising results.” In addition to producing meditative and mindful states, the same neurogenesis helping PTSD patients serves to change the destructive thought patterns of addiction.

Eating Disorders:

The four psychedelics being used to treat eating disorders are Ketamine, MDMA, Psilocybin, and Ayahuasca. Eating disorders have not been found to be responsive to traditional psychiatric medicines. This is a promising new direction.
